So my
first pedagogical implication can be summed up with the title of a very
well-known English textbook of many many years ago: look, listen and learn. I
think that what we need most as teachers is a “suspension of disbelief”, a
tolerance of ambiguity – when we are faced with different cultures we need to
stop, observe and listen carefully – just as our learners do. I do think that
the only way to understand people is to give them time – time to un-cover and
dis-cover themselves.
