We often
encourage students to guess the meaning of unknown words by using all the
clues that they can find in the text: for instance, by looking at how words
are built, how they are made up of roots and affixes. Note that to do this,
one must actually know what roots, prefixes and suffixes are; one must
know what their purpose is, how words can be changed.
